Dear Parent:

The fact that you are reading this tells me you want the very best for your child. So how do you go about preparing them for the challenges of our fast paced 21st Century? How do you teach them how to have a positive attitude, to be self motivated, to set and attain goals and to learn how to concentrate and focus? This is no easy task as this specialized type of education is not taught in our schools. It is not taught on our football, baseball or soccer fields either. Unfortunately it's not even being taught in our community organizations or religious groups. These life skills, if taught to children at a young age, can have a tremendous impact on the outcome of their lives and how successful they become.

During the many years that I have been training and teaching martial arts I have seen countless numbers of young boys and girls who were very shy and lacked anything that resembled self confidence. Some of them could not focus or concentrate for more than a few seconds at a time. Others were overweight or were slower learners than their peers. Many of these children were not doing very well in school or in social situations because of their lack of self confidence.

I have a soft spot in my heart for these youngsters. I know that with the right direction and training their lives can be changed significantly for the better. I made it my goal many years ago that we would teach much more than just kicking and punching. That our organization would specialize in personal development. In teaching life skills that would make a difference.

We have focused our entire program around this premise. Yes, I believe we teach the best in martial arts training, but that is not enough. Our entire children's curriculum is centered around what we call the Principles of the Black Belt.

Principles of the Black Belt

Over the years, I have seen hundreds of children benefit from our unique approach to teaching martial arts. 

• Overweight children who lost a few pounds through self discipline and exercise gained tremendous amounts of self esteem and self confidence.
• Smart children, who were bored in school, learned to set goals and reach higher.
  
• Shy children were brought out of their shell and learned to enjoy life.
• Overactive children learned to channel their energy and focus their attention.

What better gift to give your child than to empower them with greater self esteem, confidence, focus and concentration. At Mr. G's Ojai Valley Kenpo Karate Studio we have developed a specialized program which combines physical training with life skills development.

Our belt promotion system is based on the principal of steady consistent improvement. Self confidence and improved self esteem are developed through a series of winning experiences. This is how it works.

• Set a goal
• Have a plan
• Work hard towards it's achievement
• Persevere until you reach the goal
• Set higher goal

Of course the key is to make sure they succeed. How? We have a curriculum that is divided into small, achievable goals. When you set a goal, then work for it and achieve it, you begin to believe in yourself. Do that a few times and a person begins to feel successful.

• Improved concentration through what we call the "Rules Of Concentration".

• More Self Esteem and improved self confidence.

• Understanding self discipline and why it is absolutely necessary for success. This alone often improves grades in school.

• Increased motivation and the development of a positive mental attitude. This allows them to learn from their failures and grow from their successes.

• Goal setting skills and practical application.

• The self confidence and self discipline to say "NO" to drugs and other negatives.

• Stranger Danger training. Learning how to spot and avoid danger. What to do if danger is unavoidable.

• Social interaction, sportsmanship, camaraderie and fun!

It is important that your child have some fun in class. We have developed a series of skill and conditioning building games. We try to include some fun things in every class!

Our Instructors are trained to give each child attention so that every child feels important, makes steady progress and continues to grow and improve.

We get to know each child's strengths, weaknesses and motivation. With many years of combined experience, our instructional staff is focused and competent to meet the needs of even the most challenging students.
